Louisville, Ky. - University of Louisville men's soccer team earned its first Top 25 ranking, debuting in a tie at No. 25 in this week's Soccer America poll. The Cardinals pulled off a 1-0 upset over No. 12/20 USF on Oct. 6 and then turned around four days later and defeated No. 13 Indiana 2-1 in overtime. It was the first time since 2005 that Louisville defeated a ranked opponent and the first time in school history that the Cardinals defeated nationally ranked teams back-to-back.
The win over No. 13 Indiana gave the Cards' seven wins on the season, the most wins since 2003. The Cardinals finished last season with a 5-10-3 overall record and so far this season the Cards are 7-4-0. Seven of those games were played on the road.
EDINGTON EARNS PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS
Sophomore Phil Edington was named BIG EAST Defesive Player of the Week by the conference office. Edington helped the Cardinal defense hold No. 13 Indiana to just one goal in Louisville's 2-1 overtime win. The Hoosiers scored in the third minute but Edington and the Louisville defense held Indiana without a shot on goal the rest of the half. Indiana made several attempt late in the second half, but Edington was able to block those efforts. The sophomore anchored a Cardinal defense in a 0-0 draw at St. John's on Oct. 13. The Cardinals held the Red Storm to just two shots on goal and St. John's was held without a shot in the overtime periods.
