LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - University of Louisville freshman Alejandro Calligari defeated Illinois State's Luka Marinkovic 6-2, 6-4 to claim the Flight `A' singles title at the Tenth Annual Louisville Fall Invitational Sunday.
"Many of the past U of L tennis greats have used the Louisville Fall Invitational as a springboard to even bigger achievements," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Today Alejandro Calligari joins that list of players and looks to continue his success throughout the year. It is a rarity for someone in his first semester of college tennis to have this achievement, but Alejandro is a special player. Ben Clos is also playing with more confidence and it is showing in his singles and doubles results. Finally, I'm also pleased with the performance of Pablo Camacho and Viktor Maksimcuk as a doubles team. They are a new combination and I like the results we saw during this tournament."
Sophomore Ben Clos defeated Xavier's Ra'ees Ismail 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 to advance to the `B' division finals, where he fell 6-0, 6- to Toledo's Sven Burus.
The Flight `A' semifinals featured a Louisville versus Louisville matchup with Calligari defeating junior Robert Rotaru 6-2, 6-3.
Toledo's Sven Burus edged Tim Barnoud 6-7(8-6), 6-4, 6-4 in the flight `B' semifinals.
The Cardinals will travel to Minneapolis for the Omni Midwest Regionals Oct. 18-23.
