LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team advanced four players to their respective singles semifinals and one team to the `B' doubles finals after another solid day of play at the Tenth Annual Louisville Fall Invitational Saturday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
Junior Robert Rotaru defeated Toledo's Jared Miller 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Freshman Alejandro Calligari also beat Indiana's Peter Antons 6-4, 6-2. Rotaru and Calligari will meet in the `A' singles semifinals Sunday.
Sophomore Ben Clos picked battled Bradley's Michel Macara-Chvili to a 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 win in the `B' Division quarterfinals. He will face Xavier's Ra'ees Ismail in Sunday's semifinals.
Also in the `B' Division quarterfinals, sophomore Tim Barnoud defeated Western Kentucky's Tommy Krug 6-3, 6-4. Toledo's Sven Burus was beating U of L sophomore Morten Sivertsen 5-2 when Sivertsen retired in the quarterfinals.
In the `C' Division, Toledo's Nutthavit Likitkumchorn defeated Louisville sophomore James McArthur 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Junior Pablo Camacho fell 6-3, 7-6(4) to Xavier's Anthony Palmenter in the quarterfinals.
In doubles action, freshman Viktor Maksimcuk and Camacho defeated Morehead's Song and Medcalf 8-3 and Toledo's Burus and Likitkumchorn 8-3 to advance to the `B' division finals where they will play Toledo's Jared Miller and Jayson Miller in the `B' Division Finals Sunday at 9 a.m.
Calligari and Clos defeated Illinois State's Luka Marinkovic and Daniel Tobar 8-4, but lost to Xavier's Chris Herrlinger and Doug Matthews 8-5 in the semifinals of the `A' Doubles draw. Rotaru and McArthur fell 8-3 to UT-Martin's Stephan Bruwer and Andrey Yesipov in the quarterfinals.
In the `C' doubles division, Sivertsen and Barnoud picked up an 8-4 win over UT-Martin's and then defaulted to Eastern Kentucky's Mel Segota and Vadzim Ivanis in the semifinals.
"I was very happy with quite a few players today," said coach Rex Ecarma. "Robert Rotaru and Alejandro Calligari made it to the semifinals. Unfortunately, they have to play each other, which will be a learning experience. Ben Clos and Tim Barnoud made it to the semifinals of the B singles division and along with Viktor Maksimcuk and Pablo Camacho in the B doubles finals - six of our eight players in the tournament are still playing on the final day. Obviously, a coach wants all eight in, but 75% is a fine effort."
The Louisville Fall Invitational will conclude Sunday with the doubles finals starting at 9 a.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
