Men's Tennis Completes Second Day of Virginia Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - - Sophomore Robert Rotaru picked up two wins to advance to the semifinals of the Yellow Singles division of the Virginia Invitational Saturday. After losing his tournament opening match on Friday, senior Slavko Radman also notched two wins to move to the Orange Singles consolations finals.

Rotaru defeated Harvard's Gideo Valkin 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Yellow division. He went on to beat William & Mary's Kavi Sud 6-2, 6-2 in the semis.

Radman, No. 29 in the ITA singles rankings, defeated Radford's James Lloyd in the quarterfinals of the Orange consolations. He topped Penn's Jason Pinsky 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals.

In other singles action, freshman Horatiu Oltean defeated Penn's Mikhail Bekker 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Red singles division before falling 6-3, 6-1 to William Noblitt of North Carolina State in the semifinals. Redshirt freshman Ben Clos defeated Maxx Wattenberg of George Washington 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals of the With division. Redshirt freshman Thibaut Barnoud picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win over George Washington's Ryan Hunter in the White singles consolation quarterfinals before his 6-4, 6-1 loss to Charlotte's Brad Clinard in the semifinals.

Senior Damar Johnson fell to No. 78 ranked Eidy Igarashi of Old Dominion 6-3, 6-2 in the Blue singles consolation semifinals. Freshman David Simon lost to VCU's Damien Lacombe 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the Green singles division. Freshman Chris Herrlinger fell to VCU's Emil Lindgren 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Black singles division.

In doubles action, Radman and Johnson, No. 26 in the ITA doubles rankings defeated No. 53 O'Brien and Cojanu of William & Mary 8-5 in the first round of the Blue division. They went to beat Wake Forest's Parr and Paul 8-3 in the quarterfinals before falling to Virginia's No. 23-ranked Devvarman and Huey 9-7 in the semifinals.

Simon and Herrlinger defeated Harvard's Clayton and Nguyen 8-5 in the first round of the Orange division. Rotaru and Ben Clos edged William & Mary's Zuck and Wardell 9-8 in the Red doubles division, but fell to Virginia's Johnson and Sunderland 8-2 in the quarterfinals.
