Dominguez Honored By Baseball America

DURHAM, N.C. - University of Louisville freshman third baseman Chris Dominguez has been ranked as the fourth-best prospect in the New England Collegiate Baseball League according to Baseball America.
Dominguez, who sat out last season with a medical redshirt at Louisville, out-homered four other teams in the NECBL with his league-leading 11 regular season home runs.
He added five doubles and 23 RBI, playing in all 42 games for the Newport Gulls which captured the Southern Division title, winning 10 straight to end the regular season.
In the playoffs, Dominguez was 5 for 18 (.278) with a double, triple and home run, driving in a team-best four runs in five games before the Gulls were eliminated in the divisional championship series.
Coming out of high school in Miami, Dominguez was the top-ranked high school third baseman in the country, and 11th overall by Baseball America, and was named to the AFLAC High School All-American team. His season was ended by injury in the third game last season with the Cardinals.
Cardinal junior righty Zack Pitts also played in the NECBL, posting a 3-2 record and a 2.51 ERA in eight starts for the Concord Quarry Dogs. He struck out a team-high 45 in 57.1 IP, limiting opponents to a .211 batting average. Pitts represented the Northern Division in the NECBL All-Star Game.
Senior outfielder Pete Rodriguez spent the summer in the Valley League with the Luray Wranglers, hitting .275 with 12 doubles, a triple and two home runs, scoring 32 runs and driving in 25. He lead the team with 22 walks, was hit by a pitch nine times and was 7 for 9 on steals, making just one miscue in the field.
The Wranglers captured the league title in a 3-2 win over Staunton in game five of the championship series. Rodriguez opened the scoring in the title game with an RBI single.
Transfer Justin McClanahan spent the summer in the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League and was named MVP of the All-Star game, and placed second in the home run derby.
McClanahan finished the summer hitting .276 with five doubles, three triples and three home runs while driving in 16 runs. The junior drew 20 walks and was 4 for 5 on steals.
Infielder Greg Del George helped the Metro NY Cadets to the regular season title in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League, while fellow transfer Kyle Hollander helped the Denton Outlaws to a regular season division title in the Texas Collegiate League.
In June, Dan McDonnell was named the 18th head coach of the University of Louisville baseball team, and takes over a team that finished third in their first season in the BIG EAST, and advanced to the title game of the BIG EAST Championships.
The Cardinals will open fall practice on Friday, September 8. They will be holding open tryouts at Jim Patterson Stadium on Tuesday, September 5 at 5:00 p.m. Those interested in participating are asked to arrive at 4:30 in order fill out the appropriate paperwork.
