The 2006 Cardinal volleyball team had its first public scrimmage and head coach Leonid Yelin was pleased with his team's progress.
U of L senior Ana Yartseva Stewart led all hitters with 10 kills. She played on the Red team, although Yelin had players switching sides as he searched for the best combination of players. Yelin stopped the match after the squads tied at two games apiece.
With six new faces on the roster, U of L will have a different look. Gone are two All-Americans in Jennifer Hoffman and Lena Ustymenko, both of whom will begin professional careers later this month in Spain. Also graduated is four year starting setter Jennifer Craven, so the Cardinals will look to replace her quarterbacking skills.
"Tonight we were really taking care of the big things and I am very happy about that. A few little things we could have done better but there is time to fix that. I was changing the lineups looking for the best chemistry which is something that we will keep working on," said Yelin. "We had some unforced mistakes at this point in time that we will have to improve. But overall, I was very pleased with the way they look and this will help me prioritize the areas we need to work on the most."
