The University of Louisville's doubles team of Jakob Gusafsson and Jeremy Clark will play Georgia's Strahinja Bobusic and Colin Purcell in the NCAA doubles championship Thursday at 5:00 p.m. (EDT) in the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championship at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, California.
The senior duo of Gustafsson (Hollviken, Sweden) and Clark (Stanville, Ky.) earned the BIG EAST's automatic bid to the championship, becoming the first Cardinal doubles team to compete in the NCAA doubles championship. Gustafsson and Clark are currently ranked No. 26 in the nation and have a 22-11overall record and are 13-8 in dual matches as Louisville's top seeded doubles team. The BIG EAST all-tournament doubles team selection was ranked as high as No. 19 in the ITA doubles rankings this season.
"Jakob and Jeremy have been preparing for this opportunity since last season when the missed the NCAA doubles championship by one spot," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "They are excited about the thought of spending their last collegiate matches vying for a national championship. They are going up against a doubles team from the top-ranked team in the nation which also has a player from Louisville (Colin Purcell) the thought of two Kentucky players (Clark and Purcell) ending their collegiate careers in the NCAA doubles championship is very special."
U of L finished the 2006 season with a 19-8 overall record and at No. 27 in the ITA team rankings. The Cardinals won the 2006 BIG EAST championship and achieved a program-best No. 12 ranking during the season.
