
No. 18 Softball Tops Eastern Kentucky 8-0

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The No. 18/19 softball University Louisville softball team defeated visiting Eastern Kentucky 8-0 Wednesday at Ulmer Stadium. The Cardinals improve to 24-5 on the season and are ranked a program-best No. 18 in the USA Today/NFCA top 25 poll and No. 19 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll. EKU drops to 22-14 on the season.
The teams played through four scoreless innings before the Cardinals broke through with a three-run fifth. Kristi Cunningham and Audrey Rendon delivered back-to-back single and Courtney Moore drew a one-out walk to load the bases. Lacy Wood's single sent Cunningham home to put Louisville on the scoreboard. Michelle Vasquez's sacrifice fly plated Rendon and Moore scored on Brooke McCrain's base hit to make it a 3-0 game.
The Cardinals added five more runs in the sixth when Brittney Counts registered a pinch hit single, Cunningham walked and Rendon reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Candi Hicks delivered a two-run single to send Counts and Cunningham home increasing the lead to 5-0. Moore's base hit scored Rendon. Wood doubled to bring Hicks across the plate. McCrain's RBI single gave the Cards the 8-0 win, ending the game via the eight-run rule.
U of L's Catherine Bishop (16-2) picked up the win, striking out two batters and holding the Colonels hitless in 1.1 innings of relief. Starter Kady Garrick held EKU to two hits and struck out four in 4.2 innings, but left when the game was tied and did not get the decision. The Cardinals pounded out 12 hits. Moore was 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI. Rendon was 2 for 4 with two runs. Wood went 2 for 4 with two RBI. McCrain was also 2 for 4 with two RBI.
EKU's Kalyn Fox (7-6) took the loss, allowing five earned runs and eight hits in 5.0 innings. Chanze Patterson and Pam Webber accounted for the Colonels hits.
The Cardinals will head east for their first BIG EAST road trip, a doubleheader at Providence on Saturday, April 8 and at UConn on Sunday, April 9.
