RICHMOND, Ky. - - Senior Michelle Vasquez went 4 for 4 with two home runs and four RBI as the No. 20 ranked University of Louisville softball team defeated host Eastern Kentucky 6-0 Wednesday at Gertrude Hook Field. The Cardinals improve to 20-4, while EKU falls to 17-13 on the season.
"I was very pleased that we could put together a complete game today," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We had a couple of tough games the last week that we needed to get past."
The Cardinals jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first on Courtney Moore's two-out solo home run over the right field fence.
Vasquez led off the top of the second with a solo home run over the left field fence to increase the Cards' lead to 2-0.
U of L added another run in the fourth when Moore delivered a leadoff double, took third on Lacy Wood's groundout and scored on a single by Vasquez to make it a 3-0 game.
The Colonels had an opportunity to score in the bottom of the fourth when Katie Rolf reached on an error and Chanz Patterson drew a walk to place runners on first and second with no outs. A fielder's choice and a groundout placed runners on second and third with two outs, but the Cards' second baseman Vasquez chased down a grounder to Becky Werle out at first to end the inning.
Vasquez delivered her second home run of the game to give Louisville a 4-0 lead in the sixth inning.
The Cards added two more runs in the seventh when Leslie Garland led off the frame with a bunt single and Moore followed with a single. Vasquez registered her fourth hit of the game, scoring Garland and moving Moore to third. Totten's base hit sent Moore home to make it a 6-0 game.
Louisville starter Catherine Bishop (12-2) went the distance, scattering four hits and striking out seven en route to her sixth shutout of the season. Offensively, the Cardinals had 11 hits in the game and were led by Vasquez's 4 for 4, four RBI, two run performance. Moore went 3 for 4 with a home run and three runs scored.
"I was very happy with our offense today," said Pearsall. "We hit the ball consistently throughout the game, which is something we've struggled with lately. I was especially pleased with Michelle Vasquez who had one of her best games of the season."
Eastern Kentucky's Kelsey Anderson (10-6) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on four hits and striking out three in 4.0 innings of work.
The Cardinals will open BIG EAST Conference play when they play host to St. John's in a doubleheader Friday at 4 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium.
