LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The No. 21 ranked University of Louisville softball team scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to beat visiting Indiana State 2-1 Wednesday at Ulmer Stadium. The Cardinals improve to 14-2 on the season, while Indiana State falls to 8-9.
"Indiana State's Darcy Wood threw a great game," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We were fortunate to string together a couple of hits and score the runs we needed to win."
The Sycamores took an early 1-0 when Kelsey Anderson singled and scored on a hit by Yvette Tovar in the top of the second.
Louisville had a chance to respond in the bottom of the second when Lacy Wood singled, Brooke McCrain reached on a fielder's choice and Alma Navarrete walked to load the bases with one out. Indiana State's Darcy Wood retired the next two batters to get out of the jam.
After that, ISU's Wood allowed only two base runners before the Cardinals broke through in bottom of the sixth. Moore doubled and was lifted for pinch-runner Leslie Garland. Lacy Wood followed with a double and took third as Garland was safe on a play at the plate to tie the game at 1-1. McCrain's groundout sent Wood home to give the Cards the 2-1 win.
Louisville reliever Kady Garrick (5-0) retired all six batters she faced, striking out three to get the win. Starter Catherine Bishop allowed one earned run and three hits and struck out seven in five innings. Offensively, the Cards had five hits in the game and were led by Wood's 2 for 3 performance.
"I thought our pitching staff did a great job considering we haven't been able to play in a week and I look for us to continue that improvement," said Pearsall.
Indiana State's Wood (5-5) took the loss, allowing two earned runs and striking out six in six inning. The Sycamores had three hits in the game.
U of L will travel to Columbia, Mo., March 18-19 for a three game series with Missouri.
