LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Senior Jamie Craft snapped a scoreless tie with a little over a minute and a half remaining in regulation to help the 15th-ranked University of Louisville women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Georgetown on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Cardinal Park.
The win marked a number of milestones for the Cardinal team, and was the final regular season home game for a group of four seniors.
"It's nice to be able to get a win for the seniors today because they have been instrumental in the development of our program," noted Karen Ferguson, who captured her 50th win as head coach of the Cardinals.
The senior class, comprised of Craft, Heather Engel, Lauren Podvin and Amy Seng, won their 40th match of their four-year career - the highest total for a graduating class in school history. The Cards still have four regular season matches remaining.
The teams played a tentative opening minutes with the Cards creating a trio of scoring opportunities. The best opportunity came when Craft broke in on the right side but had her shot turned away by Jade Higgins in the 13th minute.
The scoreless first half saw U of L (10-2-1, 5-2-0 BIG EAST) outshoot the Hoyas (4-7-4, 1-5-1 BIG EAST) by a margin of six to four.
The Hoyas created a number of scoring opportunities of their own. Stephanie Zare appeared to have broken the scoreless tie in the 57th minute off a corner kick, but freshman Lindsey Fox headed the ball out off of the crossbar and out of the box to keep the game knotted at one.
"Certainly I thought Georgetown did very well today. They are very dangerous on set pieces and could have easily scored one," Ferguson added.
"We didn't really create too many scoring chances. Although we had a lot of shots we weren't really dangerous until the final 20 minutes of the game."
In the 83rd minute, Monique Gjini looked to put the Cards up, but her rocket from the top of the box glanced off the crossbar.
On the game winner Craft was sent in on Higgins 1v1 by Gjini, but was stopped on her initial attempt, only to have the rebound come back to her feet for her seventh goal of the season and 40th of her career at 88:28. It was Craft's third game winner of the season and 13th of her career.
She stands second in school history in goals and points (95) behind Jennifer Coe (50 and 113) and third in assists (15).
Gjini picked up her seventh assist of the season, tying her for second in school history and giving her 17 in her three seasons as a Cardinal, trailing only Kim Marshall (19) on the career list.
Louisville outshot the Hoyas 12-5 in the second half.
Cardinal keeper Joanna Haig made a pair of saves and punched a number of crosses out of the box to post her third shutout of the season and the teams' sixth.
Higgins finished the match with eight stops.
The Cards will hit the road for the final four regular season matches, beginning Friday at USF beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET.
