David Simon, Ben Clos and Morten Sivertsen each won their quarterfinal matches, but fell in the semifinals and the doubles team of Sivertsen and Tim Barnoud reached the Flight `C' semifinals as the University of Louisville men's tennis team completed day two of the Louisville Fall Invitational Saturday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"These young players gave it a great effort to win each division," said head coach Rex Ecarma. "We had a semifinalist in every singles division and it was definitely a solid showing. These guys are starting to grasp what it takes to be a very good team and some of those aspects showed this weekend."
The Cards started the day with Sivertsen and Barnoud's 8-2 win over Eastern Illinois' Ryan Vogt and Alex Walczak in the second round of Flight `C' doubles. They will face Marquette's Greg Sirotek and Tomek Czernuszewicz in the semifinals Sunday at 9 a.m.
In Flight `A' singles quarterfinals, Louisville's Simon picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Marquette's Stephen Shao to reach a semifinal matchup with Iowa's Bart Van Monsjou who had edged Louisville's Robert Rotaru 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in another semifinal round. Van Monsjou outlasted Simon 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (4) to reach Sunday's Flight `A' final against Butler's James Low.
In Flight `B' singles, Ben Clos topped Marquette's Sirotek 6-3, 6-4, but another Cardinal fell prey to Iowa in a three-set marathon as Tommy McGeorge defeated Clos 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the semifinals. McGeorge and Butler's Eric Breitenbach will meet in the `B' finals Sunday.
Sivertsen beat Eastern Kentucky's Mario Simic 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in the Flight `C' quarterfinals, but fell to Iowa's Scott Elwell 6-3, 6-2 in the semis.
Doubles play will begin Sunday at 9 a.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
