Men's Tennis Completes Day Two ITA Midwest Region Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - - The 26th ranked doubles team of Slavko Radman and Damar Johnson advanced to the round of 16 while Radman and freshman David Simon picked up singles wins as the University of Louisville men's tennis team completed a day two of the ITA Midwest Region Championship Saturday in Minneapolis.

The tournament's top-seeded doubles team of seniors Radman and Johnson defeated Iowa's Scott Newmark and Evan West 8-3 in the round of 32. They will face Indiana's David Bubenicek and Dara McLoughlin Sunday at 11 a.m.

In other doubles action, fell to Toledo's Mohammed Al Nahbhani and Jared Miller 8-5 in Saturday's round of 32.

Radman, ranked No. 29 in the ITA preseason rankings and the No. 5 seed in the tournament, defeated Wisconsin's Felipe Billido 6-2, 6-1 in the first round. He will face Michigan State's Adam Monich Sunday at 8 a.m. in the round of 16.

Simon lost the first set, but rallied to beat the tournament's 17th seeded Brett Helgesson of Notre Dame 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. He also advances to the round of 16 where he will face Ball state's Aaron Phillips Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

Johnson also went three sets, but fell to Northern Illinois' Brian Livingston 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the first round. In the Cards' third three-setter of the day, sophomore Robert Rotaru lost to Wisconsin's Nolan Polley 7-5, 3-6, 6-1. Freshman Chris Herrlinger lost to Illinois' Brendon Davis 6-2, 7-5.

"David Simon scored a major upset defeating Brett Helgeson of Notre Dame today," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Last year, Brett was the best freshman in the BIG EAST conference and one of the best freshmen in the entire Midwest. David wants to be one of the best newcomers in the country this year and a result like this really helps him out. Slavko Radman and Damar Johnson are doing what they're supposed to be doing, by advancing to the round of 16. We hope to have a big day tomorrow."
