Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville (1-2, 0-1) men's soccer team fell 4-3 in overtime to Cincinnati (2-1, 1-0) Wednesday evening in the BIG EAST inaugural game at Cardinal Park. The Cardinals came back from a 2-0 deficit in the first period to tie the game in the 67th minute of play.
" I think we came out with a lot of jitters and insecurity in the first half and the score reflected that," said head coach Tony Colavecchia. "We were probably the best prepared and I felt that the team was focused and in tuned but we did not play to our potential."
Cincinnati's Mike Dwyer scored in the 20th minute off a free kick from the right side of the goal. Then in the 37th minute of play, UC's Noah Davidson scored off a cross from Landry Gray to put the Bearcats up 2-0 at the half.
"We made some adjustments at the half," said Colavecchia. "We put Matt Neely in the back and he shored up our defense and gave us more security on the back line. I thought that once Gerard Voutier got going he was a difference maker. And Nick Rice-Sarantis came in the second half and really made an impact in the midfield."
Freshman Gerard Voutier was certified this week and saw his first action of the season. Voutier came in late in the first period but really made an impact in the second period. The freshman scored off a cross from Frank Jonke in the 53rd minute to put the Cardinals on the board.
Cincinnati's Tony Morelli scored off a cross from Kenny Anaba in the 57th minute to put the Bearcats up 3-1. But Louisville did not fold. Senior captain Matt Neely scored less than a minute later off a cross from senior Tim Velten to give the Cardinals new life.
Senior Ryan Edwards took a pass from Jonke in the 67th minute to tie the game. Edwards' goal forced the overtime period. UC's Morelli's scored in the 93rd minute from 20 yards out to win the game.
"I thought this team showed a lot of character to come back from 2-0," Colavecchia said. "Cincinnati scored a fantastic third goal but I thought our team showed a lot of fight and spirit to come back and score the second goal. Then after the third goal, we definitely deserved to be on steady ground. I thought that we were very dangerous in the second half. Cincinnati scored an unbelievable shot out of no where to win the game. It was an unfortunate result because both teams left everything out there on the field."
Both teams finished the game with 11 shots. UC's keeper Mike Vessells finished the game with three saves while Charlie Edwards finished with four saves.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 9th at Michigan in the Michigan Invitational at 7:00 p.m
