BIRMINGHAM, ALA. - Sophomore Liz Kinny scored two goals in leading the University of Louisville women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Tulane Friday, giving the Cards a 3-0 record for the first time in school history.
"Tulane totally out battled, outworked and out played us in the first half, but we were able to come back in the second half and capitalize on some of our adjustments," said Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
After a scoreless first half, Tulane (0-2) jumped to 1-0 lead a little over five minutes into the second half on a goal by Jessica Mendez.
"Without the heroics of Liz Kinny, I'm not sure we beat Tulane," Ferguson added.
Kinny picked up her first goal at 66:48, an unassisted goal, her first of the year, to tie the game at one.
In the 82nd minute, Kinny got loose for the game-winner. Kinny, a sophomore who attended Manual High School in Louisville, sat out the 2004 season with a medical redshirt. She scored five goals and added five assists her freshman campaign.
Shots were closely contested, with Tulane holding a 16-15 edge for the match. Tulane had six corner kicks to the Cards' one.
"You have to give a lot of credit to Tulane with all of the tragedy surrounding the university, city of New Orleans and the entire region," Ferguson continued. "Our hearts go out to all of the victims of hurricane Katrina and their families."
Freshman keeper Deana Waintraub made five saves to earn her third win of the season, with the team making two saves in front of her.
Kinny, Amy Seng and Shannon Smyth paced the Cardinals with three shots apiece, while Monique Gjini added two.
The Cardinals will meet the host of the tournament, UAB on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. ET.
