LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Freshman Shannon Smyth powered home a goal just 3:35 into the match to open a four-goal first half as the University of Louisville women's soccer team dominated Western Kentucky 5-0 in women's soccer Sunday at Cardinal Park.
"Without question this is the best 90 minutes of soccer we have played this season from start to finish," stated Cardinal Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
Senior Gina Lower sent the ball ahead to sophomore Monique Gjini who sent a cross onto the foot of Smyth, who buried a rocket under the crossbar to give the Cards a 1-0 lead. It was Smyth's second goal of the season.
In the 21st minute, it was sophomore Jen Avila finding Gjini for her third of the season, when she poked it over the keeper's head far post to make it 2-0.
After an attempted set piece broke down, U of L sophomore Liz Kinny, settled the ball down and lifted a perfect cross to the head of freshman Mallory Lampson, who buried her first career goal at 31:36.
" I tried to hold my run after the corner broke down and Liz got it to me," Lampson said.
"It was fun to score my first goal in a win on Family Weekend."
Under a minute later, junior Jamie Craft picked up her first goal of the season, an unassisted goal, with a long volley that skipped past WKU (2-4-0) keeper Meredith Goodson, giving the Cards a 4-0 advantage going into half.
The Cards (5-1-0) outshot the Toppers 14-0 in the half, and 20-5 for the game. The Cards had five corners and held WKU without a single corner for the game.
Freshman keeper Deana Waintraub was only forced to make one save on the afternoon behind a strong defense, in picking up her fourth shutout of the season.
Craft chipped home her second goal of the game, beating Goodson far post from the left side at 85:45 to close the scoring.
Craft lead the Cards with four shots, while Lampson and Gjini each had three. Seven other Cardinals added shots on the afternoon in the first ever meeting between the two teams.
"The timing of this performance is good as we head into BIG EAST play. Cincinnati will be a tough opponent to open with," Ferguson added.
Louisville will next face the Bearcats on the road on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. ET in the first BIG EAST match for the U of L women's soccer program. The Cards have won two straight against UC.
