Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's soccer team defeated Xavier 2-1 in exhibition play Wednesday evening in Cardinal Park. The teams played three 30 minute periods as the Cardinals broke a scoreless tie in the third period with two goals to win the game.
"I felt that we were in control of the game and that is a good sign," said head coach Tony Colavecchia. "Defensively we were very solid in the back. Freshman Joey Belfour did an outstanding job for his first full game. Tim Velten and John Jonke never let anything past the back line and were very commanding. The midfield is still a question mark but I think that Matt Neely was a real presence in the middle.
"David Guzman play out wide and really caught the eyes of the fans. He was one of the reasons why we looked so good on the attack. Frank Jonke was a real threat with his size and physicality."
The Cardinals had opportunities to score in the first period but could not convert. In one stretch the Cardinals had three consecutive shots on goal, with two coming from Guzman out front of the goal and Anthony Celebre off the rebound. Xavier keeper Liam Curran finished with four saves in the first period.
The Cardinals were in control of the second period as well but did not create as many opportunities as the first period. Newcomer Frank Jonke scored off an assist from David Guzman to give the Cardinals a lead with 14:43 remaining in the final period. Less than a minute later Xavier's Toni Skudrzik scored an unassisted goal to tie the score.
With under 10 minutes remaining in the game, Xavier's goalkeeper Ty Helmle came out of the box and was issued a red card for a hand ball. Guzman scored on the free kick to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.
Louisville finished the game with a 17-4 shot advantage over Xavier.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park as the take on former alumni in the Alumni Game.
