NEWPORT, R.I. - University of Louisville junior-to-be Chris Cates was 2 for 3 with an RBI and three assists in the field, on his way to being named Most Valuable Player of the New England Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game.
Cates helped the Southern Division All-Stars to a 7-2 win over the Northern All-Stars on Sunday.
The shortstop from Brandon, Florida leads the North Adams Steeple Cats in runs scored (19), steals (11) and starts (33), while his 22 walks is second on the squad.
Last season for the Cardinals, Cates hit a career-high .305 with eight doubles, while starting all 56 games at shortstop. He was featured in Sports Illustrated on April 18th and is the shortest player in NCAA Baseball, standing 5'2".
Eleven members of the University of Louisville baseball team are playing baseball in five different collegiate wood bat leagues around the country this summer (listed below). The leagues allow college players that have completed at least one season of college baseball and have one season remaining to compete during the summer months.
The leagues opened play in June and will wrap up the season in August. Typically the players will live with host families and are provided with summer job opportunities.
Play in the summer leagues does not effect a players' collegiate eligibility.
The Cards were 32-24 last season and began play in the new Jim Patterson Stadium. They return 24 players off of the 2005 squad as they prepare for their first season in the BIG EAST.
