IRVING, Texas - - Two University of Louisville student athletes, Jakob Gustafsson (tennis) and Will Hanna (golf) were named Conference USA Scholar-Athletes of the Year for their respective sports as announced by Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky. The award is based on academic achievement (GPA), athletic achievement and service.
Gustafsson, a junior from Hollviken, Sweden, compiled an 18-4 overall singles record playing mostly at No. 3. He teamed with Jeremy Clark to post a 16-7 record and appeared as high as No. 29 in ITA doubles rankings. Gustafsson was named to the All-C-USA third team and earned C-USA Sportsmanship honors. The Louisville men's tennis team (22-10) finished runner-up in the 2005 C-USA Championship. The Cards received their second consecutive at-large bid to the NCAA tournament and achieved the highest team ranking in program history at No. 24.
"Jakob Gustafsson does such a good job of representing the program and the university he is fully deserving of this award," said men's tennis coach Rex Ecarma. "He truly epitomizes what a student athlete should be."
Hanna, a junior from The Woodlands, Texas, finished tied for 32nd place at the Cardinal Intercollegiate. The Louisville men's golf team is coming off of a record-setting 2005 season, having won four tournaments and produced three individual winners. The Cards also advanced to their first NCAA Regional.
"Will has been an influential part of our program," said men's golf coach Mark Crabtree. "He has been a model student-athlete for our program and his work in the classroom is a credit to all his hard work and dedication."
