On the heels of a dramatic come from behind win over Albany, the Cardinals fell to No. 18 Northwestern 8-2 Friday in their third game of the NCAA regional action.
The teams played two scoreless innings before Northwestern broke through with a three-run third. Katie Logan drew a one-out walk and Stephanie Churchwell followed with a single. Erin Mobley's hit down the right field line sent Logan home and Churchwell scored on a Louisville error on the play. Garland Cooper's double plated Mobley to make it a 3-0 game.
Courtney Moore blasted a solo shot over the left field fence to put the Cards on the board in the bottom of the fourth.
The Wildcats struck again with three runs in the fifth when Logan and Churchwell reached safely on back-to-back infield singles. A wild pitch advanced the runners for Mobley's RBI single which scored Logan. Churchwell crossed the plate on a Cardinal error when pinch runner Elizabeth Piatt stole second. Piatt came home on when Jamie Dotson reached on a two-base error to make it a 6-1 game.
The Wildcats' Kelly Odell doubled and scored on Logan's single to increase the lead to 7-1 in the sixth. Churchwell's double sent Logan home for an 8-1 game.
Moore delivered her second solo shot of the contest and third of the day in the bottom of the sixth to make it an 8-2 game.
Northwestern starter Courtnay Foster (21-7) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and striking out seven in seven innings. Churchwell led the Wildcats offensively, batting 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI.
Louisville's Catherine Bishop (21-9) took the loss, allowing eight runs, five earned on 11 hits and striking out eight in seven innings. Offensively the Cards had seven hits in the game and were led by Moore, who finished 2 for 3 with two home runs.
U of L wraps up the 2005 season with a 43-20 overall record, setting a new school mark for wins in a season. The Cards won their Conference USA regular season title, finished runner-up in the league tournament and earned their second consecutive at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
