
Softball Falls to No. 25 DePaul 7-2

TAMPA, Fla. - - The top-seeded University of Louisville softball fell to second-seeded No. 25 DePaul 7-2 Friday on the second day of the Conference USA championship. The loss snaps the Cards' school record 15 game winning streak.
The Cards had an opportunity to score early when Candi Hicks reached on an infield hit and moved to third on Courtney Moore's single. Wood's groundout sent Moore to second to place runners at second and third with two outs. DePaul starter Tracie Adix retired the next batter to end the inning.
Louisville got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when Sara Bausher led off with a single and came on a double by Jenn Skaggs to make it a 1-0 game.
DePaul answered in the top of the fourth on Saskia Roberson's solo home run.
The Cards had another scoring opportunity in the bottom half of the inning. Michelle Vasquez led off with a double and Bausher followed with a walk. Sarah Totten singled to load the bases with no outs. Vasquez was out at home when Jenn Skaggs reached on a fielder's choice. Adix retired the next two batters to get out of the jam.
Kate Sheaks gave the Blue Demons' a 2-1 lead with her own solo shot in the fifth, DePaul tacked on four more runs in the frame to claim a 6-1 lead.
Jenny Doezie scored the second run of the frame on a fielder's choice by Sandy Vojik. With the bases loaded, Roberson added a two-run single and Vojik also scored on the play after Ashley Parker collided with Cardinal catcher Jenn Skaggs.
DePaul added an insurance run in the sixth to build a 7-1 lead after Dana Kenney singled through the left side.
U of L plated a run in the bottom of the seventh when Audrey Rendon led off with a single and scored on a double by Hicks to make it a 7-2 game.
DePaul's Adix (22-7) got the win, allowing one earned run on seven hits and striking out three in seven innings. Offensively, the Blue Demons were led by Roberson's 2 for 4, three RBI performance. The Blue Demons (39-18) advance to Saturday's championship game.
Louisville's Aja Sherman (20-10) took the loss, allowing seven runs, six of them earned on seven hits and striking out nine in seven innings. Offensively, the Cards had 12 hits in the game. Sarah Totten was 2 for 2 with a double. Rendon, Hicks, Moore and Skaggs also had two hits each in the contest.
"We hit the ball well today, but we left too many runners on when we were in position to score," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We played well, except for one inning when we made a few mental mistakes. I credit DePaul for hitting the ball and coming out aggressive at the plate."
Louisville (41-17) will face the winner of the Houston/USF game Saturday at 10 a.m. The will of the 10 a.m. matchup will face DePaul in the championship game.
