
Softball Tops Wildcats 6-0

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team defeated visiting Kentucky 6-0 Wednesday at Ulmer Stadium.
Louisville got on the board early when Courtney Moore hit a solo shot over the right field fence in the bottom of the first.
The Cards added another run in the bottom of the second when Sara Bausher led off the inning with an infield single, took second on a sacrifice bunt by Leslie Garland and moved to third on Audrey Rendon's groundout. Candi Hicks' double sent Bausher home to make it a 2-0 game.
Lacy Wood led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run to give the Cards a 3-0 lead.
Louisville added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth when Bausher and Garland delivered back-to-back base hits. Rendon's sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third with one out to set up Moore's two-run single. Moore advanced to second on the play and crossed the plate on Wood's hit to increase the Cardinals' lead to 6-0.
U of L starter Catherine Bishop retired the first 13 batters she faced before Kentucky's Meghan Cooper led off the fifth with a single to left field. Katie Campbell registered a one-out single to place runners at first and second. Cooper was thrown out at third when Emily Marks reached on a fielder's choice. Bishop struck out the next batter to end the inning and did not allow another runner to reach the rest of the game.
Bishop (18-7) picked up her eleventh shutout of the season, allowing only two hits and striking out a career-high 11 batters in seven innings. Offensively, the Cards had 10 hits in the contest. Wood led the way, batting 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Moore went 2-for-3 with a homerun, three RBI and two runs scored.
Kentucky starter Amy Kendall (2-5) took the loss, allowing six earned runs on 10 hits and striking out six in four innings. Samantha Allen entered the game in the bottom of the fifth and did not give up a hit while striking out two in two innings. The Wildcats fall to 19-36 on the season.
The Cards (33-16, 14-4 Conference USA) are currently second in C-USA and will play host to fifth-place Houston (26-23, 9-9) in the last home series of the season this weekend at Ulmer Stadium. The teams will square off in a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and close out the series Sunday at noon. The Saturday doubleheader will be televised locally on WFTE.
