Louisville, Ky. - Matt Neely and Tim Velten were named the Most Valuable Player at the men's soccer team banquet. All award selections were voted on by the players with the exception of the Coaches Award.
"Both Matt Neely and Tim Velten had exceptional years last season," said head coach Tony Colavecchia. "They are great role models for the other player and were named team captains for next season."
Louisville native Joey Watson was named the Most Improved Player after earning a starting position in the Cardinal back field as a redshirt freshman.
"Joey has been committed to the program since day one," said Colavecchia. "He worked hard and earned a starting position as a redshirt freshman."
Freshman goalkeeper Charlie Edwards earned the Coaches Award. Edwards finished the season with a 2.09 goals against average.
"Charlie earned the respect of his teammates and is quickly developing into one of the best Division I goalkeepers in the nation."
Senior Justin Pierre was named the Most Valuable Offensive Player and junior Tim Velten was named the Most Valuable Defensive Player. Pierre led the team with four goals last season. Velten helped guide the Cardinal defense to five shutouts on the season.
"All opposing coaches feared Justin," said Colavecchia. "He developed into a real presence on the field. We knew from day one that Tim would make a difference. He has class and ability."
Senior Devin Matthews earned the Most Dedicated Award for the fourth straight season.
