
Softball Soars by Eagles 8-0

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team defeated visiting Southern Miss 8-0 in five innings in a Conference USA match-up Saturday at Ulmer Stadium.
The Cards jumped to an early lead in the bottom of the first when Candi Hicks tripled to right field and scored on Courtney Moore's triple. Lacy Wood followed with a two run shot to left field. Michelle Vasquez walked and scored on Sarah Totten's double to center making the game 4-0.
Louisville added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth when Vasquez hit a two-out triple to right and came home on Totten's single. Sara Bausher singled up the middle and Leslie Garland walked to load the bases. Audrey Rendon delivered a base hit to send Totten and Bausher home. Candi Hicks reached on an error to load the bases again. Garland scored the final run when Moore reached on another Eagle miscue to give the Cards the 8-0 win.
U of L starter Aja Sherman (9-7) picked up her sixth shutout of the season, allowing four hits and striking out eight in five innings. Offensively, the Cards had 11 hits on the contest. Totten went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and one run. Bausher also went 2-for-3 with a run. Rendon finished the contest batting 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Southern Miss starter Danielle Wymer (8-11) took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits and striking out two. Shae Naramore entered the game in relief for the Lady Eagles and held the Cards scoreless for three innings before surrendering three earned runs in the fifth. Krystal Cooks finished the game, allowing one unearned run.
"I was pleased with the way we came out and hit the ball," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We also made some very good plays defensively. We played aggressively all the way around today."
U of L (20-12, 6-1) and Southern Miss (19-19, 5-5) will complete the three-game series with a doubleheader starting at noon on Sunday at Ulmer Stadium.
