
Softball Falls to Kentucky 3-2

LEXINGTON, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team fell to host Kentucky 3-2 Thursday in Lexington. The loss snaps Louisville's 10 game win streak.
Louisville had an opportunity to score early when Leslie Garland and Candi Hicks delivered back-to-back singles to lead off the game. Both runners advanced on Courtney Moore's groundout, but were stranded when Kentucky starter Meghan Cooper retired the next two batters.
The Wildcats threatened in the bottom half of the first when Brooke Marnitz led off the bottom of the first with a walk, moved to second on a passed ball and took third on a wild pitch. Amber Janneck reached on an error to put runners at first and third. Shortstop Courtney Moore and catcher Jenn Skaggs combined to throw Marnitz out at the plate on a double steal attempt which sent Janneck to second. Louisville starter Catherine Bishop struck out the next batter to end the inning.
Louisville's Bishop had a no-hitter going until Janneck broke through with a one-out single up the middle in the bottom of the fourth. Cooper followed with a double , placing runners at second and third with one out. Bishop retired the next two batters to end the threat.
The Cardinals finally broke through in the top of the fifth when Candi Hicks reached on a fielder's choice. She stole second and moved to third on a Wildcat throwing error on the play. Moore's base hit sent Hicks home. Lacy Wood's double scored Moore, giving Louisville a 2-0 lead.
The Cats responded in the bottom of the sixth. Kentucky's Marnitz led off the bottom of the frame with a single to set up Janneck's game-tying two run home run. UK took the lead when Cooper drew a walk and moved to third on Jessica Nance's single and crossed the plate on a wild pitch for the winning run in the 3-2 game.
The Cardinals had chance to score in the top of the seventh when Hicks reached on an error and moved to third on Wood's single, placing runners on first and third with one out. UK reliever Samantha Allen retired the next to batters to preserve the win.
Aja Sherman (12-8) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on three hits. Bishop allowed three hits and struck out five in 5.2 innings. Offensively, the Cards had nine hits in the contest. Moore was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Garland was also 2-for-4 with a double.
Kentucky's Samantha Allen (11-13) picked up the win, holding the Cards scoreless on two hits. The Wildcats had five hits in the game and were led offensively by Janneck's 2-for-3 performance. UK improves to 19-32 on the season.
U of L (26-14) will travel to Greenville, N.C. to face Conference USA opponent East Carolina April 16-17.
