
Softball Tops UAB 6-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team completed a three-game sweep of visiting Conference USA opponent UAB with a 6-1 win Wednesday at Ulmer Stadium.
The teams played through two scoreless innings when the Cardinals started the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the third. Leslie Garland and Lisa Estes delivered back-to-back singles to start the inning. Both runners advanced on wild pitches and Courtney Moore reached on an error to load the bases for Lacy Wood's two-run single. Moore crossed the plate on a ground out by Lisa Estes to make it a 3-0 game. Wood moved to third on a wild pitch and came home when Michelle Vasquez singled to increase the lead to 4-0.
The Cards put up a three-spot in the fourth when Sara Bausher led off with a double and took third when Audrey Rendon reached safely on an infield single. Candi Hicks singled to score Bausher and Rendon, making it a 6-0 game.
The Blazers broke through in the top of the fifth when Dusti Roberts singled and moved to second on Nicole Whitlock's groundout. Leigh Walker's two-out single scored Roberts to make the score 6-1.
Louisville's Aja Sherman (8-7) picked up the win, allowing one earned run on four hits and striking out 10 in seven innings. Offensively, the Cards had 11 hits in the contest. Vasquez was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Rendon was 3-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases.
UAB's Jennifer Nelson (6-6) took the loss, allowing six runs, four earned on 11 hits and striking out four in six innings. The Blazers fall to 15-24 (2-7 C-USA).
U of L (19-12, 5-1) will play host to league opponent Southern Miss in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 2 at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. The teams will meet in a single game on Sunday, April 3 at noon.
