The University of Louisville men's tennis team is ranked No. 26 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national team rankings released on March 22. The Cards jumped four spots from last week's No. 30 showing after defeating No. 52 Michigan State. The No. 26 ITA ranking ties the highest in school history. The Cards appeared at No. 26 in the Feb. 15 rankings as voted on by coaches.
"Twenty-six is a very good team ranking at this time of year," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "These particular rankings are done completely by computer. The computer rankings are what the NCAA selection committee goes by at the end of the season. Everyone in the top 40 last year got into the NCAA tournament. We are two-tenths of a point outside of being ranked in the top 25 for the first time in school history which makes us even more hungry to go even further."
U of L sophomore Damar Johnson achieved his highest national ranking, appearing at No. 54 in the ITA singles rankings. Johnson, a native of Steertown, Jamaica, is 14-9 overall and 12-7 in dual matches playing mostly at the top seed.
The doubles team of Jakob Gustafsson and Jeremy Clark are No. 34 in the ITA doubles rankings. Gustafsson, a junior from Hollviken, Sweden and Clark, a junior from Stanville, Ky., are 9-3 as the Cards' No. 1 pair.
Louisville (15-7) will travel to Blacksburg, Va., to take on Virginia Tech March 25. The Cardinals will host the 2005 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship April 21-24 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
