
Softball Edges USF 1-0 in Eight Innings

TAMPA, Fla. - - The University of Louisville softball team edged host South Florida 1-0 in eight innings Sunday to take two of three games in the teams' Conference USA opening series.
The teams played through seven scoreless innings before the Cards broke through in the top of the eighth. Audrey Rendon led off with a single. She took second on Courtney Moore's sacrifice bunt and came home on a single by Lacy Wood to make it a 1-0 game.
USF threatened in the bottom half of the inning when Samantha Ray reached on an infield hit and Carmela Liwag reached on an error. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Bree Spence reached on a walk, but sophomore catcher Jenn Skaggs and pitcher Catherine Bishop combined to tag Ray out at home on the ball four wild pitch. Bishop struck out the next batter for the 1-0.
The Bulls had a chance to score in the bottom of the fifth. Tiffany Stewart drew a walk and moved to third when Kim Riker reached on a two-out infield hit. Christie Chapman walked to load the bases with two outs. Ray hit a soft liner into centerfield, but senior Sara Bausher made a diving catch to end the inning.
The Cards also had an opportunity to score in the top of the sixth when Courtney Moore reached on a fielder's choice and took second on Lacy Wood's single. Sara Bausher was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but USF starter Bree Spence retired the next batter to get out of the inning.
Catherine Bishop (9-5) got the win, allowing one hit and striking out two in three innings. Louisville starter Aja Sherman tossed a two-hitter and struck out four in five innings. The Cardinals had seven hits in the game. Rendon was 2-for-4 with a run and Wood was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Spence (9-6) took the loss for the Bulls, allowing one earned run on seven hits and striking out five in eight innings. The Bulls fall to 22-15 ( 1-2 C-USA).
Louisville (14-10, 2-1) will play host to Marshall in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 22 at Ulmer Stadium.
