
Softball Splits with Southwest Missouri State and Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. - - The University of Louisville softball team defeated Southwest Missouri State 3-0 and fell to host Kansas 12-2 Friday in the Kansas Holiday Inn Invitational.
The teams played through two scoreless innings before Louisville's Sara Bausher's solo shot gave the Cards a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Audrey Rendon blasted a two-out double and scored on a single by Courtney Moore to increase the lead to 2-0.
Louisville added another run in the fourth when Amy Summers delivered a two-out triple. Bausher's double down the left field line sent Summers home, making it a 3-0 game.
Cardinal starter Catherine Bishop (7-2) picked up her third shutout of the season, scattering two hits and striking out five in seven innings. Offensively, U of L had eight hits in the game. Bausher was 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and two RBI. Moore also went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Southwest Missouri Melissa Porche (2-3) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and striking out six. The Bears fall to 5-6.
In the second game of the day, the Jayhawks jumped to an early lead when Jessica Maupin delivered a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the first.
Kansas put up a four-spot in the second. Nettie Fierros started the scoring with a two-out single. Kassie Humphrey followed with another single to place runners on first and second. Cyndi Duran's hit brought Feirros home to make it a 2-0 game. Ashley Goodrich's home run gave the Jayhawks a 5-0 lead.
The Cards broke the shutout in the top of the third when Jenn Skaggs singled and moved to second on Leslie Garland's infield hit. Rendon's single brought Skaggs home and sent Garland to third to make it a 5-1 game. Louisville had an opportunity to score again when Moore drew a two-out walk to load the bases, but Kansas starter Serena Settlemier delivered a strikeout to end the inning.
Kansas put the game away with a seven-run fourth. Humphries led off the inning with a base hit. Duran and Goodrich followed with singles to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Heather Stanley, who had entered the game as a pinch-runner. Goodrich singled. Moppin reached on a fielder's choice to second base. Louisville's Michelle Vasquez fielded the ball and threw to catcher Jenn Skaggs who tagged Duran out at home for the first out of the inning. On the next play, Moppin stole second. A Cardinal error on the play allowed Goodrich to score for a 7-1 game. Settlemier belted out a two-run homer to increase the lead to 9-1. Elle Pottorf followed with a single and Frazer was hit by a pitch to set up Fierros three-run shot for a 12-1 game.
The Cards scored a final run in the bottom of the fifth when Rendon bunted to reach first, moved to third on a single by Lacy Wood and scored on a passed ball for a final score of 12-2.
Louisville starter Aja Sherman (4-6) gave up 12 earned runs on 14 hits in the loss. Offensively, the Cards had five hits in the game and were led by Rendon, who finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Kansas' Settlemier (6-3) up the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits and striking out five in five innings. Fierros was 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI. The Jayhawks improve to 11-8.
"We were happy with our offensive performance in the first game," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "Our pitching struggled in the second game and Kansas took advantage. We still have things to work on defensively, but we need to put this game behind us and focus on tomorrow."
The Cardinals (11-8) will play Kansas at noon and Southwest Missouri at 4:00 p.m.Saturday.
