
Men's Tennis Tops East Carolina 4-1

FORT WORTH, Texas - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated East Carolina 4-1 Saturday in the semifinals of the Conference USA Shootout. The Cards will face host, 13th ranked TCU in the finals Sunday at 2:30 p.m. (EST).
The Cardinals won the double point as the team of Jeremy Clark and Jakob Gustafsson defeated East Carolina's Paulo Baumer and Nick Rose 8-4 at the top seed. The Pirates' Darren Mansell and Henrique Viana notched an 8-4 win over Mark Kennedy and Jhonny Berrido at No. 2 to even the doubles matches. Louisville's Tony Teufel and Damar Johnson clinched the point with an 8-6 win over Felipe Fonseca and Robert Stasch at the No. 3 spot.
In singles action, Johnson defeated ECU's Baumer 6-3, 6-2 at the top seed. Octavian Nicodim picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Viana at No. 3 and Nicolas Houard beat Mansell 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 for the win. Gustafsson and Clark's matches at Nos. 2 and 6 respectively, were suspended.
East Carolina's Rose defeated Teufel 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 for the Pirates' lone singles point.
"We had good effort throughout the match," said U of L assistant coach Mark Beckham. "Tony Teufel and Damar Johnson turned in a solid performance to close out the doubles point. Our top four singles players played well to help us close out the match."
