VILLANOVA, Penn. - Villanova picked up a goal with four seconds remaining to tie the match and scored on a penalty kick in overtime to hand a difficult 3-2 loss to the University of Louisville women's soccer team Sunday.
"I thought we played extremely well against a tough team from the conference and earned a better result than a loss," said Cardinal Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
"We played our best game of the year in the field in terms of going out and executing our game plan, but the most disappointing thing about the loss was that while our goalkeeping has been steady this season, it was our downfall today."
Jamie Craft netted her eighth goal of the season, and sixth on BIG EAST play at the 20:37 mark, giving the Cards (9-5-0, 4-3-0 BIG EAST) a 1-0 lead. Laura Walker set Craft up to beat the keeper 1v1.
All eight of Craft's goals this season have come in the last nine games.
Villanova (8-3-4, 4-0-3 BIG EAST) tied the game in the 40th minute on a goal by Kayce Blandford off a corner kick.
The game headed into intermission tied at one, with the Wildcats outshooting the Cards 8-2.
Sophomore Jen Avila scored her second goal of the season when she gathered her own rebound and found the back of the net in the 60th minute to give U of L a 2-1 edge.
Nikki Mabery's fourth of the season sent the game into extra time, and Lindsey Finnegan converted a PK at 92:07 for the Villanova win.
Louisville controlled the second half with a 11-6 advantage in shots.
Avila and Monique Gjini each had three shots for the Cards, with Craft and Mallory Lampson had two shots apiece.
The Cards will wrap up the regular season with four BIG EAST games at home, beginning Friday against USF at 7:00 p.m. ET. Admission at Cardinal Park is free.
