Chicago, Ill. - The Louisville men's soccer team fell 2-1 at DePaul Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals fall to 5-11-2 on the season and 2-7-2 in BIG EAST play. The loss today knocked the Cardinals out of a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament.
Five minutes into the match, sophomore David Guzman broke free, but his shot went just wide of the right post past a diving Brian Visser. Seven minutes later, Guzman fired another shot that Visser deflected and forced a Cardinal corner kick.
With just over 28 minutes left in the first half, Luke Rojo took a shot from the top of the box that Charles Edwards stopped for his first save of the afternoon.
Guzman's fourth shot of the match put the Cardinals ahead in the 27th minute. Sophomore Frank Jonke started the action with a pass from the left side to the top of the box. Guzman gathered the ball and knocked a looping liner into the upper left corner at 26:27.
Luke Rojo and Julian Chillé teamed up to tie the match with time winding down in the first half. Chillé found Rojo at the top of the box. Rojo took a dribble to his right and launch a shot into the upper corner for his third goal of the season.
DePaul (4-10-2, 2-7-1 BIG EAST) tallied the first opportunity five minutes into the second half when Chillé's cross in front of the goal found a streaking John Partyka. However, Partyka's diving header cleared the crossbar and the scored remained at 1-1.
The Blue Demons kept up the pressure as Rojo's bid for his second goal of the match was stopped by a diving Edwards in the 55th minute. On DePaul's next possession, Anthony Minniti lined up a shot in the box, but Matt Neely knocked it away before Minniti could get off the open attempt.
With just over 15 minutes left in the match, Jonke launched two shots that were stopped by Visser. Edwards returned the favor on the other end as he stopped a point blank shot by Rojo two minutes later. Visser finished the match with eight saves while Edwards totaled three stops.
John Kornfeld made the most of his first goal of the season with the eventual game-winner in the 80th minute. As the Cardinals were attempting to move the ball up field, Kornfeld stepped in an intercepted a pass. The steal set-up a one-on-one opportunity with Edwards where Kornfeld flipped it over the keeper and into the net at 79:45.
Over the final 10 minutes, Louisville attempted to tie the score, but the Blue Demon defense was there each time to clear the ball away.
