LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Senior guard Taquan Dean totalled 27 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two steals to lead the University of Louisville Red team to a 108-81 intrasquad men's basketball victory over the White team in Cardinal Arena on Wednesday night.
Dean was well-supported by a trio of freshmen that aided the Red team cause. The sold-out crowd of 850 saw forward Terrence Williams score 28 points, grab a game-high 11 rebounds and collect four steals. Point guard Andre McGee also tossed in 28 points and added three assists and three rebounds. Forward Chad Millard contributed 13 points, 10 rebounds, two blocked shots, two steals, four assists with no turnovers.
"We're a talented offensive team, but Taquan is the only guy playing the type of defense we want played," said U of L Coach Rick Pitino. "Our freshman are a tremendous class, but it's easy to put on a show when you're going against no one defensively. If this team can ever get it at the defensive end, the sky's the limit to their potential. They're just freshmen. They were all the best players on their high school team, needed to stay on the court and out of foul trouble, so they don't know how to guard anybody. When they get to college, they have to defend someone and it's new to them. They have the desire to do it, they just have to learn it. But they're great. I'm really pleased with our freshmen."
Junior forward Perrin Johnson and freshman center Jonathan Huffman paced the White squad with 20 points apiece, with Huffman adding a team-high 10 rebounds. Junior guard Brandon Jenkins added 17 points, three assists, three rebounds and two steals. Freshman guard Bryan Harvey scored 15 points, all on three-point goals.
The Red team shot 57.7 percent from the field -- 46 percent from three-point range (12-of-26) -- and held a 45-33 rebounding margin. The first half featured six ties and seven lead changes before the Red team built a 51-42 halftime advantage.
A pair of injured Cardinals sat out the contest. Juan Palacios, a 6-9 sophomore forward, injured his right foot in a pickup game on July 13 and has been sidelined since then. He will likely remain out for about a month.
David Padgett, a 6-11 sophomore center, broke a bone in his right foot in a pickup game on Sept. 19. He is expected to return to practice soon. Padgett is a transfer from Kansas who will play his first season with the Cardinals this year.
U of L plays its first exhibition game of the season as the Cardinals face Bellarmine in Freedom Hall on Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.
