Lena Ustymenko had 21 kills and tied a school record with nine aces to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-1 win over visiting Pittsburgh in BIG EAST Volleyball action Saturday at Cardinal Arena.
U of L extended its Cardinal Arena winning streak to 24 with the 30-16, 28-30, 30-22 and 30-25 win and stayed upbeaten at 19-0 and 7-0 in the league. Pittsburgh falls to 13-8 and 6-2 in BIG EAST action.
"It is nice to see what rivalries have developed in the BIG EAST already," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "It seems that when Lena makes up her mind to take over the match we are in good shape."
U of L outhit Pitt .274 to .101, outblocked them 14-4 and U of L notched nine aces (all by Ustymenko).
In the first game, U of L jumped out to a 14-9 lead and never trailed. Pitt Coach Chris Beerman used both timeouts to regroup, but .233 hitting by the Cardinals was just enough to thwart the Panthers offense. The Cards were led by Ana Yartseva who had five kills on seven attacks. Pitt was outblocked 6-1 with Yartseva picking up five in the first set.
Neither team hit well in the second game. There were four lead changes and nine thies enroute to the teams tying at 22. Pitt edged ahead to 26-23 when Louisville hitting faltered. Yelin called tinmeout and the Cardinals responded by pulling withing 28-27. A kill by Gini Ullery took the Panthers to game point. Pitt was callled for a lift to save game point but a decisive kill by Diana Andreyko evened the game score to 1-1 going into the break. Despite the loss, U of L outhit Pitt .125 to .047 and outblocked them 5-1.
In the third game, U of L hitting finally wamred up as the Cardinals hit .262 to Pitt's .128. The Cards used a 7-2 run to go up 20-15 and force a Pittsburgh timeout. The Cards never trailed again and outscored the Panthers 5-1 to win 30-22. Yartseva had eight kills to lead the Cards.
U of L hit a torrid .500 in the fourth game as U of L rolled to the 3-1 win.
