Louisville, Ky. - The Louisville men's soccer team drop a heartbreaker in double overtime to Syracuse on Saturday evening in Cardinal Park. The Orange scored with 11 seconds remaining in the match to defeat the Cardinals 2-1. The Cardinals fall to 5-9-2 on the season and 2-5-2 in BIG EAST play while Syracuse improves to 7-6-3 overall and 3-5-1 in BIG EAST play.
"I don't think you could have had more evenly matched teams," said head coach Tony Colavecchia. "Both teams knew the importance of this game and to lose with 11 seconds left on the clock is hard. A tie would have been a fair result but instead we walked away empty-handed. We just need to bounce back and get ready for South Florida on Wednesday night. Tonight leaves us with a difficult task of qualifying for the BIG EAST Tournament, we probably need to win the final two games."
The first half was evenly played until the 39th minute of play when Syracuse's Spencer Schomaker scored in front of the goal off an assist from mike McCallion. The first half ended with a 1-0 lead for the Orange. The Cardinals held a slight 5-3 shot advantage at the end of the half.
The second half once again was evenly played until the 75th minute when freshman John Jonke headed the ball into the goal off a free kick from Gerard Voutier to tie the game. The Cardinal defense held tough and the game went into over time.
Syracuse controlled most of the first overtime period, outshooting the Cardinals 5-1 but still ended the period in a tie. The second overtime period was evenly matched until the Orange were awarded back-to-back corner kicks. Pete Rowley took a cross from Richard Asante after a deflection from the corner kick to score the game-winner with 11 seconds in the match.
The Cardinals will finish out the home season as they host the No. 19 South Florida Bulls in Cardinal Park on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 7:00 p.m.
