The University of Louisville men's tennis team will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to compete in the ITA Midwest Regional hosted by the University of Michigan. The tournament runs October 20-25 and features a 64-player singles qualifying bracket, a 64-player main draw singles bracket, and a 64-team main draw doubles bracket.
Three Cardinal players will compete in the qualifying bracket that begins on Thursday, October 20. Nicolas Houard will play Imanuel Prakoso of the University of Chicago. Robert Rotaru faces Jack Komar from DePaul, and Stefan Naughton plays Kevin Hayward from Western Michigan. Eight players from the qualifying round will earn spots in the main draw.
Slavko Radman, Damar Johnson, Jeremy Clark, Jakob Gustafsson, and Jhonny Berrido already have spots in the singles main draw which begins on Saturday, October 22.
Four doubles teams will compete in the doubles main draw. The teams of Gustafsson and Clark, Radman and Johnson, Tony Teufel and Berrido, and Naughton and Camacho begin play on Friday, October 21.
"In the Midwest Regional Championship each school in the region is guaranteed one doubles team and one singles player," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We received eight singles and four doubles invitations. This is unprecedented in program history and a great compliment to last season's success. Only two other teams in the region: Ohio State and Notre Dame received this many invitations. We are excited to use this opportunity to qualify for the National Indoor Tournament."
The singles finalists and doubles champion from the event will earn spots in the 2005 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, which Ohio State will host Nov. 3-6. The 2005 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the nation's premier collegiate indoor tennis tournament, is the second of three national championship events for college tennis this season. The first events -- the Riviera/ITA Women's and Polo Ralph Lauren Men's All-American Championships -- were held earlier this month, and the third event is the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
