
Mayer Earns C-USA Academic Awards

University of Louisville's Matt Mayer earned the 2004 Conference USA Postgraduate Scholarship Award and the C-USA Scholar Athlete of the Year Award for men's tennis. The league annually presents six $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarship awards to graduates as selected by the Faculty Athletics Representatives at the conference's annual Spring Meetings. C-USA Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards are presented to the top student-athletes in each conference-sponsored sport. The award is based on academic achievement, athletic achievement and service.
Mayer, a four-year letterwinner from Houston, Texas was named to the All-Conference First Team and received the Conference USA Sportsmanship Award for the 2004 season. Mayer was also the recipient of the Ed Kallay Award honoring Louisville's top senior male student-athlete. As a senior, he posted an 18-16 record in singles, playing mostly as the Cardinals' top seed. He is tied for fifth in the school's record book for career singles wins with 90. Mayer teamed with sophomore Jeremy Clark for a 16-5 dual match doubles record. Mayer and Clark were ranked as high as No. 18 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Associate doubles rankings and had a 20-6 overall record.
Off the court, Mayer has been named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll in 2001, 2002 and 2003. In 2003-04, Mayer was also named to the National Dean's List. He plans to remain at Louisville in order to pursue his master's of engineering in chemical engineering and his MBA.
"Matt is the epitome of what it means to be a student-athlete," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "He is a true model to all young people who have a desire to balance great commitment to their sport and excellence in the classroom. Matt has earned more awards athletically and academically than any player in the history of U of L tennis and we are proud to have him represent our program."
Louisville finished the 2004 season with a 19-9 record and an NCAA regional appearance. The Cardinals were No. 40 in the final ITA rankings.
