
Men's Tennis Set for C-USA Tournament

The University of Louisville men's tennis team earned a No. 3 seed and a first-round bye in the 2004 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship in Memphis. The Cardinals (18-7) will play the winner of fifth-seeded UAB and eleventh-seeded Marquette Friday, April 16 at 9:00 a.m. The Cards are currently on a program-best 10-match win streak
Louisville, No. 36 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, is led at the top seed by senior Matt Mayer (17-14 overall, 11-10 dual matches). Junior Octavian Nicodim steps in at the No. 2 slot with a 13-14 record (8-10 dual). Nicodim is currently on a four-match winning streak and has won five of his last six singles matches.
Freshman Damar Johnson, the Cardinals' No. 3 player has compiled a 20-9 record and is 17-6 in the spring. Johnson on a five-match win streak and has won seven of his last eight. The No. 4 spot belongs to sophomore Jhonny Berrido who boasts a 24-12 record and is 17-8 in dual matches. Sophomore Jakob Gustafsson has the team's best singles record at 30-8 (18-6 dual) and will see action at No. 5. Sophomore Jeremy Clark rounds out the singles lineup at No. 6 with a 23-9 overall record and a 15-5 dual match record.
The Cards are led in doubles by the team of Mayer and Clark, currently No. 18 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. Mayer and Clark have compiled an 18-6 record this season (15-5 dual matches).
"The conference has again recognized us as a contender for the C-USA championship," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "After losing half of last year's starting lineup to graduation, we're back in the top part of our conference with a No. 3 seed. We've got our work cut out for us with No. 1 seeded TCU in our bracket, but we feel if we continue to play our game continue to work hard, we've got a chance to win it all. That is our focus, to do everything we can and lay our hearts on the line to come home with the championship. The committee seeded us fairly and now it's up to us to do everything we can to win another conference title."
