BIRMINGHAM - - Junior Aja Sherman tossed her second career no-hitter in the University of Louisville softball team's 5-0 win over Conference USA opponent UAB Sunday. The Cardinals took two of three games to win the series.
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard in the second inning when Sara Bausher led off with a single, moved to second when Aja Sherman grounded out and came home on a hit by Kristi Rozelle to give U of L a 1-0 lead.
Bausher led off the fourth with a solo home run to make it a 2-0 game. Rozelle blasted a two-out homer to increase the lead to 3-0.
The Cards put up two more runs in the sixth when Bausher and Lisa Estes delivered back-to-back singles. A wild pitch moved the runners. Bausher scored on an error when the Blazers attempted to pick her off. Audrey Rendon's sacrifice fly sent Estes home to give U of L the 5-0 lead.
Sherman (6-2) held the Blazers hitless and struck out five in seven innings. The win was Sherman's second consecutive decision against UAB in the series following her relief appearance on Saturday in which she shut down the Blazers, holding them to one hit and striking out eight in U of L's 4-3 comeback win.
Offensively, the Cardinals had nine hits in the game. Bausher was 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI. Rozelle finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run. Shannon Nord also had two hits.
"We had an outstanding performance from Aja Sherman today," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We were more aggressive offensively and hit the ball much better than we did yesterday."
UAB starter Tara Higashino took the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and striking out one in four innings. The Blazers fall to 16-20 (3-6 C-USA).
U of L (24-10, 7-2) will play host to Morehead State Wednesday, March 31 at Ulmer Stadium. The doubleheader is slated for a 4:00 p.m. start.
