
Softball Splits Kentucky Doubleheader

LEXINGTON, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team defeated the University of Kentucky 4-0 in the first game and fell 3-2 in the nightcap Wednesday at the UK Softball Complex.
In the first game, the teams battled through four scoreless innings before the Cardinals scored three runs in the top of the fifth. With two outs in the inning, Shannon Nord beat the throw on an infield single and moved to second on an error. Audrey Rendon was intentionally walked. Another error allowed Michelle Vasquez to reach on a fielder's choice and sent Nord home to give U of L a 1-0 lead. Courtney Moore blasted a two-run double, scoring Rendon and Vasquez to make it a 3-0 game.
Vasquez blasted a two-out solo shot in the top of the seventh to increase the Cards' lead to 4-0.
Louisville starter Kady Garrick (12-3) got the complete game shutout win, allowing six hits and striking out four. Offensively, the Cards had five hits in the game. Vasquez was 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
Kentucky starter Amy Kendall (5-10) took the loss, allowing four runs, only one earned, on five hits.
In the nightcap, the Wildcats jumped to a 1-0 lead when Amber Janneck jacked a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the first.
Kentucky scored again in the fourth when Brooke Marnitz drew a walk, stole second and third and came home on a wild pitch to make it a 2-0 game.
The Cardinals answered in the sixth when Candi Hicks led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jenn Skaggs. Nord singled and an error placed runners on second and third. Rendon walked to load the bases and Vasquez drew a bases-loaded walk to bring Nord home make it a 2-1 game. Rendon crossed the plate when Moore hit safely into a fielder's choice to tie the game a 2-2.
Kentucky responded in the bottom half of the sixth, when Kendall reached on a lead-off error, Marnitz walked and Katie Campbell was safe on an infield hit to load the bases. Kendall scored on a sacrifice fly by Emily Marks to give the Wildcats the 3-2 win.
U of L reliever Aja Sherman (4-2) took the loss, allowing two runs, one earned on one hit and striking out six in four innings. Wood, Estes and Nord accounted for each of Louisville's three hits.
Kentucky reliever Crystalie Wolfe (3-0) got the win, holding the Cardinals hitless in 1.2 innings. Offensively, UK had three hits in the contest. The Wildcats improve to 15-16-1 on the season.
Louisville (22-9, 5-1 C-USA) will travel to Birmingham to play UAB in a Conference USA doubleheader Saturday, March 27.
