
Softball Tops Saint Louis 6-1

ST. LOUIS - - The University of Louisville softball team defeated Saint Louis 6-1 in a Conference USA matchup on Tuesday. The Cardinals improve to 17-7 (3-1 C-USA). The teams were supposed to play a doubleheader, but the second game was postponed due to cold weather conditions.
The played through two scoreless innings before the Cardinals broke through with a three-run third. Kristi Rozelle reached and took second on two Billiken errors. Audrey Rendon followed with a single to set up Michelle Vasquez's three-run home run.
Louisville added another run in the sixth when Aja Sherman singled, moved to third when Rozelle and Amy Summers walked and crossed the plate when Vasquez hit into a fielder's choice to make it a 4-0 game.
The Cards added two more runs in the seventh when Lacy Wood led off with a double and scored on a triple by Lisa Estes who scored on a wild pitch to increase the lead 6-0.
After being held to only one hit, Saint Louis put up a run in the bottom of the seventh when Logan Justice, Christy Ernst and Cori Bittick delivered consecutive hits and Adrienne May drew a bases-loaded walk to make it a 6-1 game.
U of L starter Kady Garrick (10-3) picked up the win, allowing one earned run on four hits and striking out six in seven innings. Offensively, the Cardinals had 11 hits in the contest. Rendon, Estes and Sherman each finished with two hits.
Saint Louis starter Nielsen (6-8) took the loss, allowing six runs, four of them earned on 11 hits and striking out five in seven innings. Justice was 2-for-3 with a run. SLU falls to 8-15 (0-4).
The teams will conclude the series with a doubleheader Wednesday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
