Softball Falls to No. 18 South Florida 8-3

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team fell to No. 18 South Florida 8-3 Sunday in a Conference USA matchup at Ulmer Stadium.
The Bulls jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first inning as Kattrina Dowd led off with a walk, moved to third when Shelly Riker reached on an error and scored on Carmela Liwag's single. Holly Groves walked to load the bases for Christie Chapman's grand slam.
South Florida added two more runs in the second when Samantha Ray led off with a single and Dowd reached on a fielder's choice. Both runners advanced on Riker's sacrifice bunt and Ray came home on Liwag's single and a Louisville error sent Dowd home to increase USF's lead to 7-0.
Louisville got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when Lisa Estes singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, took third on a hit by Sara Bausher and came home on a passed ball to make it a 7-1 game.
The Bulls added one more run in the fifth when Groves singled to lead off the inning, moved to second on a Cardinal miscue and scored on Ray's base hit to give South Florida an 8-1 lead.
U of L put up two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Audrey Rendon led off with a single, took second when Michelle Vasquez reached on an error and scored on Courtney Moore's groundout. Vasquez came home when Lacy Wood grounded out to make it an 8-3 game.
Louisville starter Kady Garrick (9-3) took the loss, allowing seven runs, six of them earned on four hits and striking out one in 1.1 innings. Reliever Aja Sherman gave up one unearned run on four hits and struck out five in 5.2 innings. Offensively, the Cards had five hits.
South Florida starter Leigh Ann Ellis (18-4) picked up the complete game win, allowing three unearned runs on five hits and striking out three. The Bulls had eight hits in the game and were led by Liwag, who finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. The Bulls improve to 27-7 (1-2 C-USA).
The Cardinals (16-7, 2-1) will travel to St. Louis to take on the Billikens in a C-USA series March 16-17.
