University of Louisville tennis player Damar Johnson was named Conference USA Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Feb. 4.
The freshman from Ocho Rios, Jamaica, defeated No. 58 Tigran Martirosyan of Kentucky, (1-6, 6-3, 7-6) at No. 3 singles in the Cardinals' 6-1 loss to the No. 10 Wildcats in Lexington. Martirosyan was a semifinalist in the SEC Indoor Championships two weeks ago. Johnson also teamed with Jakob Gustafsson at No. 3 doubles and won against Michigan State's Anthony Stefani and Mike Brown, 8-6, in U of L's close 4-3 loss in Lansing to the No. 58 Spartans.
Johnson is currently 3-1 in singles in dual matches and has posted a 3-1 record in doubles with Gustafsson. He is currently ranked 27th in the Midwest region.
"Damar is steadily showing that he should be a strong consideration as C-USA's top freshman," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "I recruited him to be an impact player as a freshman and he is definitely meeting my expectations. The sky is the limit for Damar's future - he is a perfect fit for our system."
The Cardinals (3-3) will travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn., to play Middle Tennessee State Saturday, Feb. 7 at 1:00 p.m.
