The University of Louisville The University of Louisville defeated No. 19 Iowa 2-0 in the second game of a doubleheader as part of the Red and Black Classic at Ulmer Stadium Sunday.
U of L starter Catherine Bishop threw a complete game, giving up five hits, no runs, struck out six and walking only two.
After five scoreless innings, U of L finally got on the board when Audrey Rendon led off the sixth with a double, and Courtney Moore smacked an RBI triple to break the stalemate. Aja Sherman jacked a solo homerun in the top of the seventh for the insurance run.
"When Audrey Rendon opened up with a big hit it really made things happen," said Pearsall.
Iowa challenged Bishop in the second inning, loading the bases with two outs before Iowa centerfielder Laura Chipman popped up to second to end the threat. The Hawkeyes last chance to score came in the sixth when they had runners on firs and second with one out but failed to push a run across.
"I am really excited about our performance against a very good Iowa team," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We hung in there with them in the first game and I think we gained a little confidence. In the second game we had a tremendous performance by our freshman pitcher who threw a smart game."
The Cardinals (11-6) scored two runs on just four hit for the win despite striking out 12 times. Iowa was shutout despite five hits, including a triple by Birocci, who was saddled with the loss to drop to 2-3 on the season. The Hawkeyes fall to 6-3 for the season.
