The University of Louisville softball team won its home opener 2-0 over Western Kentucky as Garrick threw a three-hitter for the home opening win.
"I was very pleased with our defensive play," said head coach Sandy Pearsall, whose club improves to 9-5 and played errorless ball. "And Kady Garrick had another great performance on the mound for us today."
Garrick threw a complete game, three hitter and struck out five enroute to her seventh straight win. She now posts a 7-1 mark for the season.
The Cardinals had some timely hitting from Courtney Moore had a two-RBI double to account for all the scoring. U of L in broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third when Aja Sherman reached on an error and advanced to second on an Audrey Rendon base hit. Shannon Nord's sacrifice hit moved the runners before Candi Hicks was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Moore's double scored Sherman and Rendon for the 2-0 lead.
"Courtney stepped up and delivered the two-run double in a clutch situation," said Pearsall.
The Cardinals made the most of an otherwise offensive drought. Western Kentucky pitcher Allison Silver gave up only three hits and also struck out five. She drops her record to 2-1.
"Now that we have our first game jitters out of the way, I expect our offense to come back around. We'll need to continue to be aggressive at the plate and not just wait for the one down the middle," said Pearsall.
