A four-run third inning was all the University of Iowa needed to shut out the University of Louisville 4-0 in the first game of a softball doubleheader at Ulmer Stadium at the Red and Black Tournament.
Iowa's Emily Gerlick had a three-run homer off of U of L starter Kady Garrick in the third after the Hawkeyes' Kylie Murray smacked an RBI double. Reliever Aja Sherman came in and pitched two and two-thirds innings, giving up two hits and striking off four to keep Louisville in striking distance.
However, the Cardinals were stymied by Iowa's pitcher Ali Arnold who pitched a complete game three-hitter and struck out eight Cardinal batters while walking none. The Cardinals threatened in the fourth inning with runners on second and third with one out. But U of L grounded out and struck out to end the inning. Audrey Rendon tripled with two outs in the fifth but was stranded.
Starter Kady Garrick took the loss for the Cardinals and dropped her record to 7-2. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for the freshman from Tucson, Ariz.
