
Softball Defeats Toledo 9-3

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville softball team defeated Toledo 9-3 Saturday in the Red and Black Classic at Ulmer Stadium.
The Cardinals jumped to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Shannon Nord reached and moved to second on a Toledo error. A single by Candi Hicks brought Nord home to put U of L on the scoreboard. Courtney Moore's single placed runners on the corners for Lacy Wood, who hit into a fielder's choice, but another Rocket error sent Hicks and Moore home to make it a 3-0 game. Lisa Estes singled and Alma Navarrete walked to load the bases for Kristi Rozelle who singled to score Estes. Estes crossed the plate on a groundout by Michelle Vasquez to give the Cards a 5-0 lead.
Louisville scored another run in the third inning when Rozelle singled and scored when Vasquez reached on an error to make it a 6-0 game.
The Cards added two more runs in the fourth when Moore drew a walk and scored on Wood's triple. Estes' single brought Wood home to make the score 8-0.
Toledo got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the fourth when Gina Muratori reached on an error, moved to second on a single by Kristin Duvall and scored on a hit by Amy Morris to make it an 8-1 game.
U of L scored its final run in the sixth when Wood led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Audrey Rendon to give the Cards a 9-1 lead.
Toledo added two final runs in the bottom of the sixth when Muratori singled and moved to third on an error and scored on Kristin Duvall's base hit. Duvall crossed the plate on a double by Erica Singer to make it a 9-3 game.
Louisville starter Catherine Bishop (2-3) picked up the win, allowing three runs, two of them earned, on seven hits and striking out five in six innings. Aja Sherman came on in relief, holding the Rockets hitless and striking out two in one inning. Toledo starter Stephanie Moore (0-1) got the loss, allowing eight runs, three of them earned, on eight hits in 3.1 innings. Kristina Shultz allowed one earned run on five hits and struck out three in 3.2 innings.
Offensively, Louisville had 13 hits in the game. Rozelle was 2-for-3 with two RBI and run. Wood was 2-for-5 with a double and a triple, an RBI and three runs. Moore finished batting 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Estes was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run. Hicks was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Rendon was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.
Toledo had seven hits in the contest. Duvall was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Van Vossen was also 2-for-3 with a double. The Rockets fall to 0-2.
U of L (10-5) will face No. 19 Iowa (5-2) Sunday at noon at Ulmer Stadium.
