RALEIGH, N.C. - - The University of Louisville softball team recorded its second straight shutout with a 5-0 win over Purdue Saturday in the North Carolina Triangle Classic.
The Cards got on the scoreboard in the first inning when Shannon Nord led off the inning with an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Candi Hicks and scored when Lacy Wood reached on an error. Courtney Moore's two-out single placed runners on first and third to set up Lisa Estes' two-run double, giving Louisville a 3-0 lead.
U of L added two more runs in the sixth when Audrey Rendon singled, moved to second on Shannon Nord's single and took third when Hicks grounded out. Sara Bausher's single sent Rendon and Nord home to make it a 5-0 game.
Louisville starter Kady Garrick (3-1) recorded her first career shutout, scattering two hits and striking out two in seven innings. She retired 14 consecutive batters before giving up her first hit in the sixth inning. Purdue starter Diana LaRiva (2-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out six in four innings.
Offensively, the Cardinals had 10 hits in the contest. Rendon was 3-for-3 with a run. Estes was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Nord finished batting 2-for-4 with a run scored. The Cards improve to 4-3 on the season.
"We finally got our offense going and had another solid game from Kady Garrick," said U of L head coach. "We played well defensively and things are starting to come together for us."
