LOUISVILLE, KY. -- The University of Louisville Cardinal volleyball team swept the ECU Pirates 30-18, 30-24, 30-14 in front of a standing room only crowd in Cardinal Arena Friday night.
Led by Steph Marsh's 11 kills and Candice Cogan's 15 digs, the Cards improved their record to 21-2 and remain undefeated in Conference USA play at 11-0. ECU falls to 12-15 and 4-6 in league play.
"The crowd was awesome," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "You could really tell that the crowd was making it so fun for our players. It made a huge difference and I hope we get the same kind of crowd when we host the Conference USA Tournament here."
The Cardinals scored the first five points of the match and led 8-1 before ECU was forced to call timeout. It didn't get much better from there as the Cardinals continued to pound the Pirates. They led 22-13 before ECU called its final timeout.
Following the timeout, the Cards used a relentless attack to bury the Pirates in game one, scoring seven of the next 12 points.
Steph Marsh and Anastasia Yartseva led the Cards in that game with five kills each, and the Cards dominated ECU in hitting percentage, .308 to -.022.
On the strength of nine kills by Anastasia Yartseva, U of L was able to pull away from ECU in game two.
Neither team could establish and advantage early on in game 2. The teams were tied at 10 early and U of L led 14-11 when ECU scored six straight points to take a 17-14 lead.
From there, U of L went on a run of its own, scoring the games next seven points, and 10 of the next 11, to lead 24-18 and force ECU to call timeout.
The Cardinals finished game two, again outhitting the Pirates .280 to -.023. ECU finished with 24 errors in that game.
In game 3, the Cards jumped out to an 8-1 lead and froced an early timeout by ECU. However, the break would do no good for the Pirates as the Cardinals twice led by as many as 13 points.
ECU never got any closer than six points from there. The Cardinals scored the games final three points to finish the match.
ECU was led by Kelley Wernert's 11 kills and two blocks.
