LOUISVILLE, KY - Meghan McCallion's goal 4:12 into the second overtime squeezed East Carolina past the University of Louisville 3-2 at Cardinal Park Sunday afternoon.
"This was a good game for us to experience heading into the Conference USA tournament because that is the kind of intensity we will see," noted Cardinal Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
"Lauren Podvin scored two of the best goals we've scored all season, but unfortunately it was not enough," Ferguson added.
The teams were scoreless through the first half, but the Pirates(7-8-2, 5-3-1) broke the scoreless tie in the 55th minute on Tara Shaw's second goal of the season for a 1-0 advantage.
In the 75th minute a ball sent in by the Cards(11-4-2, 5-2-2) was deflected to Podvin, and she ripped it to the top right corner of the net, beating ECU keeper Lauren Church to make it 1-1.
Just over three minutes later, Megan Rasmussen served a ball across the field into the six-yard box where Podvin one-timed it into the back of the net for a 2-1 Cardinal lead.
At 84:59 Louisville was whistled for a handball in the box, and ECU's Krystel Paybey converted the ensuing penalty kick to tie the game at two.
After a scoreless first overtime, it was McCallion that beat Meredith Miller from 30 yards out for the game winner.
Louisville outshot ECU 21-10 with 11 Cardinal shots on goal.
Church was injured in a collision with U of L sophomore Jamie Craft and was forced out of the match in the 86th minute. Church was credited with seven saves before departing.
Her replacement Lindsi Troxler made two saves in just over 18 minutes of play, including a point blank stop of Podvin in the second overtime.
Miller had four saves for the Cards. Podvin had five shots, while freshman Jen Avila had four to lead Louisville.
The Cards will wrap up the regular season at home against TCU on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. before the Conference USA tournament in St. Louis, November 3-6. Saturday, October 30th is Senior Day for U of L at Cardinal Park, as six seniors will be honored in a pregame ceremony. Admission is free.
